I had a friend a few years ago that took me by surprise when she proudly announced she always sends herself roses on valentine’s day. She was married, happily or not, I was never quite sure, but married non-the less with two kids.

The idea struck me as a touch absurd, she was sending herself roses, yet the card was signed as if her husband had sent them. She was so consumed by the perceived importance of receiving roses at work in front of her female co-workers. I didn’t get it.

The coordination of that self-made gesture of love simply proves that she valued her co-worker’s impression of her more than what was going on with her marriage. I’m sure she felt very satisfied with her plan coming together so nicely every year and I’m very sure the women in her office didn’t give two hoots about her carefully planned delivery!

She is the reason why valentine’s day leaves me feeling very uneasy. We all know valentine’s day is not an Australian thing, we have slowly adopted it and it’s becoming a greater part of our calendar each year, but it’s not something we are used to just yet. However, there’s no escaping it, it’s here and we have to navigate our way around it.

But surely sending yourself roses to impress co-workers is not the way we should be heading.

My husband does buy me roses on valentine’s day, at the end of a long day he returns home roses in hand and I do love it. The reason I love it so much is he gives me the flowers in front of our kids and they just swoon when it happens. It reminds them that we are in love and it creates another layer of confirmation that Mum and Dad are a solid team. The roses then sit as a reminder of that love and security for the rest of the week, it’s sentiment is sweet.

The reality is this can happen any day of the year, flowers can be given at any time. Love can be shown at any time, flowers or no flowers.

With both of us being insanely scheduled this year I’m going to turn this event on our calendar into something that works for us. I have made a date night jar. This little jar is filled with numerous date nights that we can pick and choose from. Dates that can be had at home, date nights out, expensive dates and dates that cost absolutely nothing. I have had so much fun with this little project I know he is going to love it!

Valentines Day Glamor Hippie

Here are some of the date night ideas in our jar:
  • Play Putt-Putt golf
  • Go to the movies
  • Make dinner together
  • Play cards
  • Play strip Jenga
  • Have a movie and picnic night on the TV room floor
  • Give each other a massage
  • Go on a double date with another couple who make us laugh
  • Make a couples ‘bucket list’
  • Go bowling
  • Have a fondue night
  • Go to a new restaurant
  • Roast marshmallows in the outdoor fire-pit
  • Go to a concert
  • Go to the next festival that’s in town

These are just a sample of the date nights in our jar, some of them seem so simple but when you have kids dates like these don’t happen very often! The best part of making this valentines gift is you can tailor it to your budget and interests.

Have fun this valentine’s day, make it work for you without worrying what everyone else thinks, it’s the best way to embrace it. If you are stuck for an idea on what to do this valentine’s day I think strip Jenga would be much more fun than sending yourself roses to work! But that might just be me.
