I recently wrote a post CREATING A LOVING LIFE. This post created some magnificent conversations about how ultimately we are responsible for creating the life that we deserve. Today I want to talk about how you can create change. If we want to something to improve such as living a happier life what do we need to do to achieve that?

Transformation is a powerful word. Often when we fantasise about transforming something and go about tackling the transformation but fall short and end up somewhere close to where we began but just slightly altered.

Our lives often feel like Groundhog Day and that’s OK until it’s time to change what’s not working. When that moment arrives ask yourself these questions:

This answer is not to be a broad sweeping statement. It’s an answer that needs to be clear and precise. How can you achieve what you want if you don’t know exactly what it is? Being vague about this question and not being able to pinpoint exactly what you desire means you will not get very far. Know what you want, exactly what you want.

Is the need greater than the consequence? Is the transformation worth it? We are a society of the ‘quick fix’ and we are accustomed to avoiding pain and settling on pleasure. Transformation and change are not easy, it takes time and often it’s far from pleasurable. Are you able to make the change at this stage in your life?

This is the most vital question. Are you truly willing to do what it takes for as long as it takes? Are you willing to dedicate the time, energy and resources?

At this stage, you need to work out exactly how long you need to make the transformation. Break it down into smaller more achievable steps. Looking at it as one large picture is fine but breaking it down to smaller step allows you to achieve success along the way which is more likely to keep you on track. Set individual timeframes for each step and keep track of your progress.

“It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you fail by default.” – J.K Rowling

Breaking your goals into smaller steps helps with this. Failing at what you initially set out to achieve would be devastating. However, failing along the way is very different. Failing opens you up to assess the situation. Why did you fail that step? If this happens it creates an opportunity to reassess what you set out to achieve, is it still something that you desire? Has your motivation changed? Do you need to ask yourself what do I really want?

Being harsh on yourself and participating in self-loathing is absolutely not OK. Ever. Accept and love yourself through the process. Know that perfection is impossible. Learn from the experience and allow the process to unfold.

Knowing what you want. Implementing what needs to be done and surrendering to the journey will ultimately lead to success. “A dream in your heart without a plan in your head will never be a result in your hand.” – Pat Mesiti

Life is an amazing journey that we all get to experience the way we desire. Sometimes we just need to re-evaluate exactly what that is and take the steps to get to where we want to be.
