Converting to organic is a fun adventure. It’s exciting to discover locally grown food. You take great pride in the vast amount of organic products in your supermarket shopping trolly. You notice the difference in taste between organic and non-organic fruit and veg. You may even find yourself trying to convert others, much to their disgust! Don’t worry they’ll get it one day.

There are many, many areas of your life that can be cleaned up from harmful toxins and of course fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy and the logical places to start. You can make a direct link that food you eat containing harmful pesticides and toxic chemicals are going directly into your precious body.

But what about what we use every day to clean our teeth?

The importance of good dental hygiene becomes more and more apparent every year as research develops. The University of Buffalo recently discovered that the risk of breast cancer was 14 per cent higher in women with gum disease. The research indicated that mouth bacteria may be entering our bloodstreams and compromising breast tissue over time. So we need to ensure we have no inflammation and take all the necessary precautions to prevent gum disease.

However, reaching for your toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss might not be the safest option.

Going ‘organic’ as I mentioned is an adventure. Changing products you use to clean your teeth can be a difficult step. It’s something that’s ingrained in our daily lives. We all have a favourite brand of toothbrush and toothpaste. We all have our own little rhythm to how we brush, where we brush and when we brush. It’s personal. Much more personal than the brand of milk we buy. So it can be hard to change.

Did you know that there are several ingredients in regular toothpaste that can cause us harm?

First, let’s look at Fluoride. We are all ever familiar with this ingredient. It’s in our toothpaste and it’s added to our water supply. Fluoride will assist in fighting cavities. The reality is it can also cause a whole host of problems if we are over-exposed to it. We are essentially getting what we need from our water supply, the addition of it to our toothpaste is doubling up. Filtering water doesn’t remove fluoride unless you have an extreme water filter, so the average adult and child are getting what they need via the water supply.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is next on the list. This ingredient is what makes our regular toothpaste foam up. The interesting fact is that SLS is just essentially a detergent, yep, detergent! It is also found in some shampoos, I will cover what’s in shampoo in another post.

Next, comes hydrated silica, it’s used to give toothpaste that grit that polishes teeth. You’re probably most familiar with it as the clear beady stuff in the “Do Not Eat” packets used in packaging. Not much else to say about that really.

Then there’s saccharin, it’s used in most regular toothpaste to sweeten the paste. This sweetener is 300-400 times sweeter than sugar. So it’s cost effective as only a small amount needs to be used. This is a chemical that has been made in a lab and the human body has no way to break it down. Health authorities worldwide agree that saccharin is safe for us to use in products today. However, back in the 1970’s, there were several studies that linked saccharin to the development of bladder cancer in rats. Further research that many still to this day argue wasn’t adequate was put forward and saccharin was deemed safe.

With the twice-daily routine, we all undertake to keep our teeth nice and clean is brilliant. We need it to maintain the health of our teeth, tongue, gums and the health of our bodies. Thankfully there are many amazing products on the market today that has been made without any harmful toxins. They have everything we need to maintain optimal oral health for those of us concerned with what is being used in regular products.

It’s worth researching the alternatives and discovering what’s out there. You might just find a brilliant option that works for you and your family.
